On October 11th, Tesla's self-driving taxi, Robotaxi, made its official debut at the "We, Robot" event. Elon Musk named the Tesla Robotaxi as Cybercab, which doesn't have a steering wheel or pedals. The car is expected to start production in 2026, with a planned sale price below $30,000.
At the event, Elon Musk took a ride in the Robotaxi. The car drove around at Warner Bros. Studios, taking Musk to the side of the stage. The silver Tesla Robotaxi has a streamlined body, and looks more like a two-door coupe. Elon Musk has said on social media that the design inspiration for the Cybercab came from the movie Blade Runner. The design released at the conference also showed this, and the combination of cold and warm tones gave people a strong feeling of the future.
Elon Musk didn't go into much detail about the Cybercab's autonomous driving abilities, but from the look of it at the event, the car indeed achieved complete autonomous driving. Users can work, watch videos, and sleep inside it.
Worth mentioning is that the Cybercab's self-driving solution uses AI and visual processing, which is different from the radars and sensors widely used by other self-driving taxis (like Waymo). As a result, the Cybercab doesn't need expensive equipment to keep manufacturing costs low.
