The car owner thinks that the interior of the new Model Y is too quiet after the test drive, Tesla has noticed this issue

【PCauto】Recently, a test drive event for Model Y captured significant attention. However, some participants raised concerns that the vehicle’s exceptionally quiet cabin might cause drivers to overlook potential danger outside the vehicle.
The interior quietude was described by several drivers as "uncomfortable." There is apprehension that such an overly sound-insulated environment could impede drivers to perceive external sounds—most critically, the sirens of emergency vehicles like ambulances and police cars. On the road, the rapid detection of these cues is paramount for ensuring driving safety. Missing such alerts could lead to dire consequences.
Throughout the development phase, Tesla invested considerable effort in perfecting Model Y’s serene cabin. The vehicle is equipped with acoustically lined glass, crafted using advanced engineering techniques to significantly reduce the penetration of external noise. In addition, the sealing strips on doors and windows were comprehensively upgraded, effectively blocking out unwanted sounds. Together, these measures substantially diminish the intrusion of road noise into the cabin.
In response to the feedback from test drivers, Tesla has taken definitive steps to address the issue. Lars Moravy, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, confirmed that the company is acutely aware of the concerns and is actively considering the implementation of new features to counteract the effects of the excessive quietness.
On one front, Tesla may optimize and upgrade the existing "Joe Mode" feature, which is initially designed to lower the volume of non-critical alerts to avoid disturbing occupants. The company now envisions integrating external camera inputs with "Joe Mode." With this enhancement, the system would immediately alert the driver upon detecting an approaching emergency vehicle, compensating for any reduction in auditory awareness within the quiet cabin.
Alternatively, Tesla is contemplating the addition of a white noise function. This feature would allow drivers to turn on/off customizable white noise based on their individual needs, counterbalancing the suppression of incidental sounds—such as the subtle hum of the motor—while still ensuring that critical external noises are perceptible. This approach aims to preserve a calm interior without compromising the driver’s situational awareness.
Drawing on driving data from over one million Model Y vehicles worldwide, Tesla’s engineering team has developed a dynamic acoustic perception algorithm. This sophisticated system intelligently identifies and amplifies key environmental sounds—such as ambulance sirens and pedestrian alerts—while maintaining the intended quietude of the cabin. It also incorporates an AI-driven environmental sound filtering capability that distinguishes, in real time, between background noise and critical warnings, automatically enhancing dangerous signals. Supporting three customizable noise reduction levels ("Immersive / Balanced / Transparent"), the system can adapt to diverse scenarios and even trigger an in-cabin alert when pedestrians are nearby, thereby enhancing vehicle-to-outside interaction and overall safety.
