  • Overview of the car series

The Nissan Leaf is one of the most affordable electric vehicles in Malaysia.

    Interior configuration

The interior is considered to be at a level similar to that of rental cars or taxis, with a lower perceived quality compared to cheaper models like the Mazda 3. The infotainment system is outdated, Bluetooth connectivity is difficult, and the sound system is poor. However, all buttons and switches are logically placed and easy to operate. The steering wheel lacks telescopic adjustment, and there are no rear air vents.

    Driving experience

The vehicle is silent and vibration-free when starting, with torque delivered instantly. The steering is light but with a slower ratio, and cornering is smooth. The brake calibration is average, with a somewhat abrupt transition from regenerative braking to actual braking. The e-Pedal system can be activated via a switch on the center console and becomes a convenient feature once accustomed to it. Acceleration is relatively smooth, with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 8.2 seconds.

    Riding comfort

The interior is quiet, the suspension is well-tuned, and the ride is smooth. The seats are comfortable, though the rear seats could be better. Road noise is low at all speeds, and vibration isolation is excellent, making it a relaxing car to drive.

    Range and charging time

The Leaf uses a Type 1 port for AC charging and CHAdeMO for DC fast charging. AC charging may require an adapter. From 100% to 20% charge, it can cover 150-180 km in a week, with a full charge offering an actual range of about 250 km. A 50 kW DC charger can charge from 20% to 80% in about 30 minutes, while a 6.6 kW wall-mounted charger takes about 7 hours to fully charge. For urban residents, the range is sufficient to alleviate range anxiety.

    Conclusion

At RM 180k, the Leaf’s interior and features feel outdated and lacking. However, as an entry-level model into the world of electric vehicles, it is easy to operate with a low learning curve. Its maintenance costs are lower than those of internal combustion vehicles. While charging infrastructure is still developing, it’s not recommended for long trips to remote areas. If used for daily commuting to the office and occasional shopping, the Nissan Leaf makes for a good starting point.
