Overview

The Hyundai Kona is highly anticipated, after many obstacles. HSDM had planned to introduce it early but delayed due to various reasons, it was not launched after being previewed at the 2018 Kuala Lumpur International Auto Show, and the related discussion was rekindled after an undisguised model was found in Malaysia, HSDM revealed that the price starts at about RM 115k.

Power System

The basic Kona 2.0 has a power configuration similar to the Mazda CX-3, with a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine combined with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The turbocharged Kona with its 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol unit performs well, with 265 Nm of torque at 1500 rpm, easy acceleration, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, for a better driving experience. There are two versions worldwide, the Malaysian version is front-wheel drive with a simpler torsion beam rear suspension.

Interior Configuration

The Kona's interior is rather ordinary compared to the exterior, similar to other Hyundai models. Some soft-touch materials are used to enhance the ambiance, but it is difficult to distinguish due to the similar color and hard plastic. This is improved with the contrasting color design around the seats, air vents, shift lever, and start button. All versions support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The trunk space is average, at 361 liters, smaller than the Honda HR-V.

Exterior

The Kona has a unique exterior, with a two-tier front face, LED daytime running lights are above the projection headlights, with Hyundai's signature staggered front grille. The rear also adopts a two-tier design, with a slender taillight on the upper part, and turn signals, reversing lights, and rear fog lights at the lower edge of the bumper. It comes with a plastic overlay and 17 or 18-inch alloy wheel hubs.
