  • Overview of the series

Honda Malaysia offers four variants of HR-V, RS with sporty appearance, Hybrid with excellent driving performance.

    Power system

The 1.5-liter engine of the HR-V Hybrid uses direct injection and the Otto cycle, unlike the Honda City Hybrid and Honda Jazz Hybrid. 0-100km/h acceleration takes 9.5 seconds, 0-100-0km/h in 13.6 seconds, braking distance is 37.5 meters. The RS model requires 10.8 seconds for 0-100km/h, 0-100-0km/h in 15 seconds, braking distance is 43.3 meters. Both cars are equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with instantaneous torque output from the electric motor in the Hybrid, and the RS has sharp steering feedback, but affected by the 18-inch large wheels.

    Fuel consumption

RS averages about 7 liters/100 kilometers, Hybrid is about 5.3 liters/100 kilometers, both are higher than the average level, HR-V is one of the most fuel-efficient SUVs on the market.

    Vehicle dimensions

The size of the HR-V is moderate, larger than most B-class SUVs, but not clumsy in narrow parking lots. The RS variant comes with 18-inch wheels, while the standard variant has 17-inch wheels.

    Interior configuration

The HR-V has a practical interior, a dual-level center console adds storage space and controls are easy to reach. The Hybrid variant has a unique shift knob and dashboard, RS has a more premium leather-wrapped steering wheel, but the infotainment system is a weak point, with subpar graphics, sound quality, and user interface. The USB port location and current also leave a lot to be desired. RS has full leather seats, Hybrid has semi-leather fabric seats, the latter is more comfortable and supportive. The rear seats fold flat or up, the RS trunk capacity is 437 liters, Hybrid is 404 liters due to battery reasons, but the actual load capacity is stronger than the theoretically larger Proton X70.

    Honda HR-V Pros and Cons

    Pros

The exterior design is unique, attracting people from all angles, especially the front end, which looks very sporty
The unique two-door side view and the hidden door handle on the C-pillar make it unique
The interior of the car is spacious and practical, comfortable to ride and drive, and responsive to manipulation
Rich configurations, some high-end comfort and convenience features are usually only found in large SUVs

    Cons

It looks more like a raised sturdy two-compartment car rather than an SUV, the posture is not authoritative enough
The coupe-style design occupies a part of the rear interior space, the slanted curved roof line slightly reduces the rear head space, and tall passengers may be uncomfortable
Engine power is insufficient and not delicate enough, no hybrid options available, basic model configuration is lacking

    Conclusion

The Honda HR-V is a practical and satisfying small SUV, but its bland engine and transmission system is disappointing.
