Overview of the Series

Vehicle Dimensions

The new D-Max has changed in size, comparison data between the old and new models are as follows:

Length: old model 5295mm, new model 5265mm (shortened 30mm)

Width: old model 1860mm, new model 1870mm (increased 10mm)

Height: old model 1795mm, new model 1810mm (increased 15mm)

Wheelbase: old model 3095mm, new model 3125mm (increased 30mm)

The new model has an increased minimum ground clearance to 240mm (the previous generation was 235mm), a water depth of 800mm, same as the Ranger, better than the Hilux and Triton's 700mm.

Interior Features

The interior features leather seats that are soft yet supportive, providing excellent thigh and lateral support. The breathable materials used in the seats help prevent back sweating, and the "Anti Vibration Elastic Comfort Foam" padding is effective in enhancing comfort. The cabin uses a significant amount of soft-touch materials, which give it a pleasant tactile feel. The X-Terrain variant also comes with an auto-dimming rearview mirror, an e-LUMAX analog instrument cluster with a 4.2-inch multi-information display, and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The audio system, equipped with 8 speakers, delivers satisfactory sound quality, while the system interface is responsive and supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Power System

The new D-Max is equipped with the updated 4JJ3-TCX engine, replacing the previous 4JJ1 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine. While the displacement and number of cylinders remain the same, the new engine produces a maximum power output of 190 PS and a torque of 450 Nm, an increase of 13 PS and 70 Nm over the previous generation. The engine is responsive, with smooth power delivery and good performance even at low revs. Noise control is decent, though not as good as the Triton. The 6-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, although it does not feature paddle shifters. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a rear differential lock.

Safety System

The forward collision warning function in the ADAS feature is sensitive and loud, and there is no 360-degree camera, only a rearview camera. But other features such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beam, and adaptive cruise control with stop and go function work well.

Ride and Handling

The suspension has been redesigned, making it extremely comfortable. The body uses a high proportion of high-strength steel to increase rigidity and reduce weight. The seat foam helps to reduce vibrations, making driving more comfortable. The steering response has improved compared to the previous generation, but it is not as direct as the Hilux or Triton. The brake pedal feels progressive and gentle.
