Overview of the series

A few months ago, Volkswagen Malaysia launched the 2020 Volkswagen Arteon R-Line, with only one R-Line version, priced at RM 221,065 (excluding insurance and SST).

Power system

The power comes from a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 190 PS and 320 N·m of torque, all of which is transmitted to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (wet type).

Interior configuration

Opening the frameless door, the interior is similar to Passat, with a vent design that runs through the entire dashboard and retains the central analog clock. What's unique is the GTI-like flat-bottom steering wheel and Nappa leather seats with a carbon fiber style decoration. It is equipped with an 11.7-inch digital dashboard and 9.2-inch touch screen infotainment display, supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless connection only supports Apple CarPlay. The audio is an 11-speaker 700-watt Dynaudio sound system.

Safety system

A potential issue is the lack of any form of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), with no automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring.

Driving experience

The driving experience is similar to Passat, it's mature, more passionate when turning, with less body roll, more stable when cornering, and better grip. But the power system is not strong enough, the chassis can handle more power. Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) helps with weight transfer and direction changes.

Ride comfort

The suspension is hard when driving. In comfort mode, low speed driving is acceptable, with occasional bumps. It drives smoothly when the road condition is good, but can get bumpy even in comfort mode when the road condition is not good. Mechanical noise suppression is good, but the 19-inch high-performance tires make noise on highways. Subjectively, the noise level is similar to Passat, on the noisier side.
